Twenty-year Flagler County resident and homeowner Jane Gentile-Youd is running for Flagler County Commission District 4 in the 2022 election. She ran for the same office in 2018, earning 40% of the vote, despite a budget of 6% of her opponent's. This year, her opponents are three Republicans: incumbent Joe Mullins, Victor Barbosa and Bonnie Leann Pennington.
Gentile-Youd is running an NPA (no party affiliation) campaign, saying in a press release that "local issues affecting Flagler County are all non partisan in nature." Some of her goals include a responsible approach to county spending by limiting Consent Agenda requests for funding not to exceed $150,000 per item and "putting a stop to the current one stroke millions of dollars approved without discussion."
She hopes to "put the brakes" on increases in density in undeveloped and partially developed PUDs (planned unit developments). She also hopes to amend the Commercial C-2 zoning approvals, "which are both causing a strain on municipal services and negatively the quality of life of current residents."
However, she said she is in favor of affordable housing, as long as it is affordable and built in accessible areas not being promoted for tax breaks. "More public transportation goes hand in hand with affordable housing," she said in the press release.
The county needs to address concerns related to drainage, internet access and roads on the west side of of Flagler County, she said.
Gentile-Youd's involvement with Flagler County began in 2002 when she lobbied the county and Florida Department of Transportation to enhance, add guard rails, lighting and beautify the Old Dixie Highway bridge, according to her press release. She helped advocate for I-95 resurfacing.
A frequent in-person attendee of county meetings since 2017, she is also a former Zoning Board and Community Council member from Miami Dade County, and is the recipient of many civic awards (including a day named after her), according to the press release.
Gentile-Youd has been a real estate broker for 40 years.
"Outrageous overspending and bad financial decisions by the county, causing numerous costly lawsuits should be stopped, in addition to the over budgeting for the legal department," she wrote in a press release.
