The Florida Department of Health in Flagler County will hold a vaccination session for teachers on March 20, in accordance with federal guidelines that prioritize teachers and school staff for vaccinations.

The department has vaccinated close to 3,000 people per week for the last two weeks, Florida Department of Health-Flagler Health Officer Bob Snyder said on Flagler Broadcasting's "Free For All Friday" radio program on March 20.

Teachers, school district staff, law enforcement officers over 50 and firefighters are now eligible for vaccination.

"We’re so glad this is happening, the expansion of those getting the vaccine," Snyder said.

Meanwhile, although COVID-related hospitalizations are down, the number of COVID-19 cases in Flagler County has increased: The daily case average was 27 last week, up from 23 the week before.

Florida Department of Health-Flagler Medical Officer Dr. Stephen Bickel said be believed behavior was the likely culprit.

"I think people are feeling like it’s starting to be in the past, or they’re getting worn out from the precautions," Bickel said.

The county has had recent outbreaks at a migrant farm camp, at the Sabal Palms Assisted Living facility, and in third- and fourth-grade classes at Belle Terre Elementary School, Snyder said.

"Now’s not the time to be complacent about public health measures and not wearing masks," he said.

A total of 25,467 people in Flagler County have been vaccinated so far, he said, and the county is ranked eighth out of the state's 67 counties for the percentage of population vaccinated.
