American Legion Post 115 honors Dena Malissa Hutchins of the US Women Army Corps

Hutchins died last week, just short of her 100th birthday.

Dena Malissa Hutchins, born July 20, 1921, was one of the first African American women to join the United States Women Army Corp, leaving from Jacksonville, in 1943. She served her country for 30 years, traveling around the world.

During her several tours of duty, she received numerous accommodations and awards culminating in achieving the rank of staff sergeant. Hutchins died July 7. On July 20th she would have been 100 years old.

The American Legion Post 115 would have presented to her on July 20 the Certificate of Appreciation for her service.

"We salute and will always love her," her family wrote.
