A man wanted for violating parole for an armed burglary in Wisconsin ran for four years, but Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested him on Sept. 25 after he tried to flee a traffic stop, then crashed his car, according to the FCSO.
Deputies saw suspect Michael Anthony Ross' gold Chevrolet sedan speeding south at about 80 mph on U.S. 1 at about 11:29 a.m. and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the car sped off, reaching speeds of greater than 100 mph, according to an FCSO arrest report.
Deputies backed off to avoid endangering the public with a chase, but the car careened through a red light at the State Road 100 intersection and then crashed into a tree at 309 N. State Street.
The car was disabled in the crash, but Ross ran until a deputy was able to stop him with a Taser on South Railroad Street.
Ross, 24, at first refused to give his name, but deputies were able to use a Rapid Identification technology device that revealed his identity — and the outstanding warrant.
“This is another great example of how technology and good police work can pair together to fight crime,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in an FCSO news release. “When a deputy initiates a traffic stop they never know what they are walking into. In this case, deputies caught a wanted fugitive who has been on the run for four years. I am glad no one was hurt by his reckless actions. Let this be a lesson to fugitives who think they can hide out in Flagler County. We will find you, you will go to jail, and we will use our technology to get you.”
Deputies took Ross to the county jail, where he is being held on a $6,000 bond for his Flagler County charges and no bond for the out of state warrant, according to the FCSO. He listed a home address on East Booe Street in Bunnell.
