When shopping in the new Rusty Wagon Art & Funky Furniture Redo Joint, 1030 N. U.S. 1, you’ll find unique items and you’re also likely to have a laugh or two.
Rochelle Cannon, owner, and Angie Vogt, have been friends for 30 years and have fun with what they do, reimagining old furniture or turning wooden pieces, such as fencing or barnwood, into works of art.
And currently, in time for the season, they have a Christmas room, where visitors can pose for a holiday photo.
They have a room for woodworking, a room for painting and several rooms where furniture is displayed. Customers can buy a furniture piece as is, or commission Cannon and Vogt to change the color or paint a design to fit their décor.
The two friends have been doing this type of work for 30 years, and now that they have the shop, are able to have all of their supplies and tools in one place.
“We were able to clean up our homes,” Vogt said. “My garage looks great.”
Cannon previously owned Just Like New resale shop, which is still operating in the same plaza, and decided to concentrate on restoring items.
“I’m a big fan of not throwing stuff away,” Cannon said. “I like restoring things.”
She showed an example of a solid oak table that was in a Southwester design. By sanding, refinishing and changing the fabric, she made it more coastal.
Painting discarded wood with designs really took off after Hurricane Matthew, because so much debris remained for a while, Cannon said.
Two customers on a recent day, Henry and Jan Houle, were having a photo they took of the Granada Bridge mounted behind an old wooden window frame.
“These ladies are very creative,” Henry Houle said. “And they have a lot of laughs.”

Management group marks 30 years
Southern States Management Group celebrated 30 years of lifestyle and asset management with a luncheon Nov. 8 at Oceanside Country Club. Employees were recognized for excellence in service and staff members who helped start the company were welcomed back.
President and Founder Fred Annon expressed his gratitude to those who helped shape the business for three decades. This family-owned business employs over 30 professionals located between Volusia and Flagler counties. SSMG specializes in community management of residential and commercial associations with a portfolio of over 150 communities.
The leadership team consists Annon; his oldest son Jeff Annon, vice president involved in many local charitable organizations; his youngest son, Mark Annon, who was recently named one of the Top 40 Under 40; and his son-in-law, Troy Railsback who serves on the board of directors of YMCA Volusia-Flagler and the Ormond Chamber of Commerce.
Organizations that SSMG has supported include Ormond Beach Rotary, Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, Building Association Managers of Volusia, Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce, YMCA Volusia Flagler, Ormond Beach All Stars 9U, The Museum of Arts & Sciences, Cubs Scouts of America, The Girl Scouts, Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Tomoka Elementary School.
Bleeding classes set
Halifax Health Medical Center of Daytona Beach, in conjunction with BleedingControl.org, has released its 2019-2020 schedule for Stop the Bleed Training. This free, one-hour training class teaches participants how to help in a bleeding emergency before professional medical help arrives. The class will be offered from Nov. 14 through Aug. 13, 2020.
Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign to encourage bystanders to become trained to help in an emergency before professional help arrives.
