Tutus are for racing also
Nearly 200 participants laced up for the 2nd Annual Pink Tutu 5K on Oct. 13 presented by Halifax Health in partnership with Tanger Outlets Daytona Beach, the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA and Runner’s High Timing and Race Management. Held at Tanger Outlets in recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the run/walk event promoted breast health awareness and raised funds for the Halifax Health Foundation’s Center for Oncology Fund.
Approximately 50 cancer survivors were hosted by Halifax Health to participate in the race. The Pink Tutu 5K is a part of the Live Your Life Well Race Series presented by Halifax Health. For a listing of upcoming races, visit www.lylwseries.com.
Also, Halifax Health, in partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, hosted 100 women on Oct. 20 for Pamper Yourself Pink – A Pink Tea, a breast cancer awareness event.
Attorney joins million-dollar club
The Million Dollar Advocates Forum has announced that attorney Ron Zimmet Jr., of Ormond Beach, has been certified as a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Membership in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum is limited to attorneys who have won millions of dollars in verdicts, awards and settlements. There are about 5,000 members across the country and fewer than 1% of lawyers are members, according to a press release.
Free haircuts offered to military, vets
For the seventh consecutive year, Great Clips salons across the country, including the one at 1185 W. Granada Blvd., will show appreciation to active and retired military service members on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, by offering them either a free haircut or a free haircut card to use later.
Great Clips salons provide over 200,000 free haircuts each year to active and retired military members.
Also, nonveteran customers who get a haircut on Veterans Day at Great Clips salons can receive a free haircut card they can give to an active service member or veteran as a token of thanks. The cards can be redeemed for a free haircut from Nov. 12 to Dec. 31 at any Great Clips salon.

Hospital donates bras
AdventHealth recently donated nearly 400 bras to help local women in need. Throughout October, the AdventHealth facilities in Volusia and Flagler counties hosted an array of events to celebrate women’s health and help fight breast cancer where participants donated new bras to local organizations that help women.
Robotic surgery available
Mainland High School and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students visited AdventHealth Daytona Beach on Oct. 23 to get a behind-the-scenes look at the hospital’s new da Vinci® Xi surgical system, an advanced technology to perform robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery.
This learning opportunity was part of a celebration of AdventHealth Daytona Beach and AdventHealth Palm Coast’s new surgical option for patients.
Wawa aids Boys & Girls Club
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties was presented with a $1,000 donation from Wawa during the Grand Opening of the store located at 600 W. Granada Blvd. The Wawa stores throughout the area partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs, according to a press release.
Public invited to Stemfest
Stemfest 2019 will be held Nov. 7, 8, and 9 at Daytona Stadium, 3917 LPGA Blvd. This three-day festival will draw nearly 10,000 local students to experience what STEM is all about, according to a press release from Volusia Schools. The event will be open to the general public 9 a.m.—5 p.m. Nov. 9 and will feature drone racing championships.
Stemfest was created for students in 2018 to celebrate four pillars of academic disciplines; science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It features exhibitors providing hands-on activities, live performances, interactive demonstrations and family-oriented STEM entertainment. Coca Cola, Career Source of Flagler Volusia, Embry Riddle, Team Volusia Economic Development and the city of Daytona Beach are sponsors and also exhibitors.
Tickets for Nov. 9 can be purchased at the gate. Students under 18 will be admitted free with $10 paid adult admission.
