Deputies arrested a man who, after smashing the windows of another man’s truck, allegedly attempted to strike him with a 2-foot-long steel pipe, according to a charging affidavit released by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrested John Vincent Benning, 52, of Bunnell on Sunday, June 2, at a property on Tangerine Avenue in Bunnell.
The victim, a 49-year-old man from Bunnell, told deputies that he used a toilet on Benning’s property. While he was using the toilet, he noticed a leak and a crack. He told Benning’s stepdaughter about the crack in the toilet, not knowing if he was the one who caused it. The victim then fell asleep in his 1997 Ford Ranger, which was parked between a pool and a wood line on the property. He awoke to Benning and Benning’s wife arguing. He reported to deputies that he heard Benning say “bring the kids inside,” according to the report.
The victim then stated that Benning smashed the windows of the victim’s truck with a steel pipe. Benning then swung the pipe twice at the victim, missing both times.
The victim, who said he feared for his life, fled the scene and notified law enforcement.
The report notes that every window on the truck was broke, and there were also dents. The damage was estimated to be over $1,000.
Benning was placed under arrest and was taken to the Flagler County Jail without incident.
