The annual Brave-Aid golf tournament on Saturday, July 27, raised $16,000 to help wounded veterans. The two-player challenge tournament, held at Pine Lakes Golf Club, was open to men and women. Raffles and silent auctions were offered. Capstone Financial Planning group assisted in raising the money to aid veterans in Flagler and Volusia counties. Visit https://braveaid.org.

Youth photographers awarded nationally

The Photography Club of Flagler County annually sponsors photography students of Flagler Palm Coast High School in the annual Photographic Society of America Youth Showcase Photo Contest, according to a press release.

Each year, the students inspired by Instructor Angie Biggs demonstrate the winning skills of creativity, imagination and craftsmanship. They compete with about 900 entries from over 90 high schools. The local results of the 2019 contest by category are:

The first and second place and honorable mention awards are also accompanied with cash prizes and a free one-year PSA Membership. All of the above images will be exhibited at the 2019 PSA International Conference in Spokane, Washing, Sept. 25-28, online and in the September PSA Journal.

Kids' Fishing Clinic reels in 400 people

The Flagler Sportfishing Club held its 10th-annual Kids’ Fishing Clinic that on July 13 at Bing’s Landing. The event drew 249 kids and approximately 400 people, according to a press release.

“We had single mothers, grandparents and parents bring kids to the event,” club President Captain Chuck Gleichman said in the release. “We doubled the number of educational stations this year, and everyone flowed through quickly, learning about everything from fish habitat and conservation to how to throw a cast net.”

The Flagler Sportfishing Club, along with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Fish Florida and volunteers offered six skill stations that taught the participants about casting, conservation, habitat, knot tying, proper fish handling and how to throw a cast net. After attending all six stations, each participant received a “Good Angler” award.

The first 200 kids received a free fishing rod, donated by Fish Florida. Each child also received a free hot dog and water donated by Flagler Sportfishing Club.

Plantation Bay women make a difference

A group of 12 women who resident in Plantation Bay in Flagler County are making it their mission to help locals in need.

Last fall, they formed a group that is now named SHARE: Seeking to Help All, Realize Every Potential. They began donating their time to the Family Life Center, a nonprofit that works to end domestic violence and sexual assault locally. The group went shopping with Christmas wish lists, for the women at the help center, to help make the holiday joyous.

This spring, SHARE further helped the women at FLC by appealing on Nextdoor Plantation Bay for donations of cosmetics and personal care items to then donate to the women at the center. They deemed this imitative “Project Beautiful” and over 500 cosmetic and personal care items were delivered in time for Mother’s Day.
