The Revolution of Kindness, a student organization at Flagler Palm Coast High School, meet on Wednesday, July 24, to revitalize the Memorial Butterfly Garden in FPC’s courtyard.
ROK was started in January 2019, by then-sophomore Chante Miles, whose goal was “to end bullying at FPC and make a kinder campus,” according to a press release. The organization developed quickly with teacher Mike Rinyu, who gave his time and classroom for a group of about 20 kids to meet each week. Relying on the generosity of parents, the group purchased “Start A Revolution of Kindness” bracelets, that they will continue to sell on campus this fall. Money raised from the bracelets will support club activities, including the upkeep of the Butterfly Garden.
The gardening efforts were a family affair. Both Miles and ROK member Gabrielle Jackson brought their families to help out. Terri Schanding, Miles’ mother and a huge supporter of ROK efforts, worked alongside the students, as well as siblings Bobby and Katia from Bunnell Elementary School. Jackson’s dad, Nick Sanitate, who owns Nice Landscaping, brought landscaping equipment and expertise to help out the students. Gabby’s siblings, Jasail, from Buddy Taylor Middle, and Nicholas and Ethan, from Rymfire Elementary, also lent helping hands in the garden. Rinyu worked with the students, as well as his two sons, and FPC SGA Sponsor Evana Frettered and her two daughters.
ROK is open to all FPCHS students in the 2019-20 school year. Meetings will be held on Thursdays in Rinyu’s room from 2:30-4 p.m.
