Flagler County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin, first elected to the commission in 2010, participated in his last meeting as a commissioner Nov. 19, beginning with a presentation by Commission Chairman Greg Hansen recognizing McLaughlin's service to the community.

McLaughlin lost the Republican primary election to Joe Mullins, who won the general election and will take the commission seat in a ceremony the morning of Nov. 20.

"Nate has given us eight years of faithful service. ... You've done a great job for this county," Hansen said, presenting McLaughlin with a plaque recognizing McLaughlin's time as a representative of District 4.

"I just want to thank you for your outstanding deliberation, your caring attitude and your deliberative nature — on this board, in this county, with me and all the constituents here in Flagler County, whether we agree with you or disagree with you. And, many a time, I sat in this chair and disagreed with you. But I can always say, without question, you were always kind and very deliberative in nature."

As the meeting closed, resident George Mayo, a Palm Coast resident and frequent speaker at commission meetings, thanked McLaughlin.

"He's done well for us and he's always done his due diligence," Mayo said. "He's been very resourceful, he answers all the questions, and he's a good listener. ... So Nate, I just wanted, again, to thank you very much for your service."

Palm Coast resident Ed Fuller also praised McLaughlin.

"I just want to thank you for your outstanding deliberation, your caring attitude and your deliberative nature — on this board, in this county, with me and all the constituents here in Flagler County, whether we agree with you or disagree with you," Fuller said. "And, many a time, I sat in this chair and disagreed with you. But I can always say without question, you were always kind and very deliberative in nature. And I want to thank you for your eight years of service to our citizens, to me, and this wonderful county that we live in ... and I want to wish you success in all you do."

Commissioners Donald O'Brien and David Sullivan told McLaughlin that they appreciated Mclaughlin's public service.

McLaughlin closed the meeting.

"This has been quite an honor and a pleasure to have spent eight years sitting here in this chair," McLaughlin said. "I appreciate the trust and the faith that the community has put upon me. And I know even tonight, there are people who walked out and said, 'Well, I'm glad he didn't get re-elected.' And that's part of the job, and we appreciate opposing views and we can't always agree. But it's been great, and I'm proud of the work that I've been able to participate in here. It's been a great time. ...  It's been a joy and a pleasure, and quite humbling."
