Spruce Creek baseball’s season came to an end on the afternoon of Thursday, May 17. The Hawks, who played Lake Mary for the third time this season, advanced to the Class 9A Regional Semifinal but had their hopes dashed after only five innings of play.

Lake Mary defeated the Hawks 3-2.

Despite the loss, Spruce Creek, the only area team left in the playoffs, was paced by starting pitcher Cole Beverlin, who struck out seven batters through the first three innings.

The Hawks led 2-0 after the third inning, following a 2 RBI single by Brandon Marsh.

Then all of the Hawks’ momentum disappeared.

Lake Mary’s Albert Duran nailed a 3-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give Lake Mary the lead for good.

At the start of the sixth inning, the rain began to fall. Umpires eventually ruled that the field was “unplayable,” and since at least 4 1/2 innings had been completed, according to FHSAA rules, the game could be called.

The Hawks finished the season with a 19-9 record, including nine wins in their last 10 games.
