A dog running loose got into a local woman's backyard and killed her kitten, then charged at her before she fired a handgun, scaring it away, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office report.

The woman, who lives on Ryecroft Lane, told deputies she'd heard her 6-week-old kitten screaming from the backyard the afternoon of May 17, and she went out to see what happened.

She told the deputy that a dog, which she described as a white pit bull mix, was in her backyard killing her kitten.

She got a gun from inside the house and came back out.

The woman "stated that the dog was holding the kitten in his teeth and shaking the kitten back and forth violently," according to a deputy's report. "Upon seeing this, she screamed; the dog then dropped the kitten and turned and charged toward her."

Afraid of being attacked, she fired the handgun toward the dog at a downward angle, missing by about 12 feet, and the dog ran out of the yard.

A neighbor who heard screaming and was told by a second neighbor that a dog had killed the kitten called the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, and deputies arrived at about 4:50 p.m.

A deputy who arrived on scene looked for the dog but couldn't find it, or the fired round or a casing.

There was a mark in the dirt from where the woman had fired but no collateral damage.

A Palm Coast Animal Control officer, William Doonan, responded and found the dog at a home at on Ryecrest Lane. He detained the dog.

Doonan told deputies the that dog wasn't hurt but was hearing impaired.

Another neighbor told the deputy that the same dog had growled and charged at him on May 14, and he'd kicked it away.
