Sidelines: Sharks qualify for states in five events

The Atlantic Sharks track and field team competed in the Class 2A Region 2 meet on Wednesday, April 25, at First Academy in Orlando. The boys advanced to the state meet, held May 4-5 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, in five events. Here are the Sharks’ top finishers:

400-meter dash: Jason Axon 49.73 (3rd)

800-meter run: Axon 2:00.42 (4th)

4x400-meter relay: Relay Team 3:30.97 (3rd)

High jump: David Long 1.87 meters (3rd)

Long jump: Long 6.6 meters (3rd)

'Starting Five' Camaraderie Breakfast to be held May 5

The second-annual “Starting Five’ Camaraderie Breakfast and Golf Outing is on Saturday, May 5, at Cypress Head, located at 6231 Palma Vista St. in Port Orange. Ed Kershner, Dave Jones, Elaine Dean, Norman Ready and Jay VanRhee will be honored for their leadership skills on and off the basketball court. Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. and golf starts at 10:30 a.m.

Sign up for Creek Soccer Camp

The third-annual Creek Soccer Camp will be held June 4-8, June 11-15 and June 18-22 at Spruce Creek High School. The camps are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Full-day and half-day camp options are available. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 16. The camps will be directed by Spruce Creek coaches Edson Abadia and Keith Costner, as well as current and former Hawks players. Campers can attend any or all of the three weeks the camp is offered. The camps will focus on developing the players' technical, physical and tactical skills. All participants will receive a camp t-shirt and a pizza party on Fridays. There are discounts for multi-week campers and for families with multiple campers.

Halifax Rowing competes in Sweeps State Championships

For the first time in club history, the junior girls 4+ finished on the podium at the FSRA Sweeps State Championships in Sarasota. Emma Dominguez, Brooke Bell, Elisa Maneke, Julia Van Cleef and Meredith Pallamaerts, all of Spruce Creek High School, captured the Bronze medal in the 1,500-meter race, finishing ahead of girls high school crews from around the state. Vince Leffler (Spruce Creek) and Zach Stapleton (Seabreeze) posted a seventh-place finish in their varsity 2-boat. The HRA boys junior 4+, made up of Thomas Spelmans, Dylan Anderson and Eli Coleman (Seabreeze) and Armeen Khazraee, Ryan Welch (Spruce Creek) — one of the youngest crews in their event — finished 12th.
