A lack of time and a shortage of dentists willing to see young children keep parents from getting dental care for their children, according to a survey conducted by the Department of Health in Volusia County. To improve access to dental care, the department’s Women, Infants, and Children program and dental clinic collaborated on an initiative that has earned the agency a Prudential Productivity Award from TaxWatch.
The initiative was to make dental care more convenient for parents by providing it during a WIC appointment. It began in January 2016 and during the first year, nearly 2,000 children age 1 to 5 received care.
According to www.floridataxwatch.org, TaxWatch selects winners annually for the award from nominations submitted by state agencies and other organizations.

Cobb Cole adds attorney
Cobb Cole, Daytona Beach’s largest law firm, has hired Taylor Westfall, of Ormond Beach, as an associate attorney.
After graduating from Seabreeze High School, Westfall attended University of Florida where she was on the President’s List or Dean’s List every semester and the executive counsel of the Criminal Justice and Law Honor Society. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in criminology and law and then attended Florida State University College of Law.

Trauma Talks set
Halifax Health will present Trauma Talks 2018 Emergency Medicine Conference on August 24 and 25 featuring fundamental concepts of trauma care. The conference, with experts in trauma injury, will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, 100 North Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach.

Marketing director named
Florida Hospital has selected Stephanie Mellenberndt to serve as the director of marketing for both Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach and Florida Hospital New Smyrna in New Smyrna Beach.
Mellenberndt has served as director of marketing for Hawaiian Tropic in Ormond Beach and as director of marketing strategy for the Orlando Magic.
Foundation raises $204,000
Halifax Health-Foundation raised $204,000 during its 2018 Bahama Casual event June 1 at The Shores Resort and Spa in Daytona Beach Shores. Proceeds will support leading-edge healthcare for present and future generations in the Greater Daytona Beach Area, according to a press release.
Wound doctor certified
Karla Ann McNish, M.D., has earned the designation of Certified Wound Specialist Physician of the American Board of Wound Management. This board certification is a formal recognition of a master-level knowledge and specialty practice, according to a press release.
A graduate of Florida Atlantic University and Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Dr. McNish specializes in family medicine. Currently, she provides physician services for Halifax Health Medical Center’s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy programs in the Halifax Health - Center for Advanced Wound Healing.

Stroke care recognized
For the second consecutive year, Halifax Health Medical Center has received the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment.
Halifax Health also received the Honor Roll Elite Plus award for meeting measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment. Visit halifaxhealth.org/stroke.
