Joanna Hughes, the Wadsworth Elementary School Teacher of the Year, has been a kindergarten teacher for her whole education career of 14 years.

“Often teachers teach several grades in their careers,” she said. “I have been lucky enough to spend the last 14 years teaching 5 year olds. I loved kindergarten and can’t imagine doing anything else.”

She said her teaching style is “a combination of structure, routines, love and lots of learning fun.”

“I spend a lot of time building positive relationships with my students and parents,” Hughes said. “I want my students to look forward to coming to school to learn every day. I want the parents in my classroom to know we are team and to feel comfortable knowing what we are doing each day in the classroom.”

Beyond teaching, her dream is to one day appear on reality TV show, "Big Brother."
