First-grade teacher Janine Kerry is Belle Terre Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year.

She began her teaching career in Flagler County Schools in 1996 and was at Indian Trails Middle School through 2005, as an ESE Inclusion Support Facilitation Teacher in first through third grades.

She’s been a Belle Terre Bobcat for 14 years, as well as the chairperson for the BTES Sunshine Committee and a Positive Behavior Interventions Support team member.

“Teaching is an adventure and forever changing,” Kerry said. “Meeting them at ‘Day 1’ at our Bobcat Meet the Teacher event is a critical point to start to grow with my kids. … We celebrate success and the ‘little learning steps’ with cheers and support in our classroom family.

A little-known fact is that Kerry was born in Poland and adopted with her brother from a Polish orphanage when she was 18 months old. They were brought to live in New York.

Her family is one filled with educators and former school district workers, so she’s been widely encouraged and supported through them.

“Teaching is a ‘never-ending’ career and choice in life,” she said. “You give your heart.”
