Could summer really be over? That question resonated throughout the FPC gymnasium at the Back to School Jam on Saturday, July 23. School resumes on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
“I can’t believe it,” Old Kings Elementary Principal Benjamin Osypian said. “But I miss the kids, and this makes me happy.”
The event was an opportunity for every student in the county to buy school T-shirts, learn about Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, bus stop routes, food assistance, and -- sorry kids -- Skyward Access, a program that allows parents to check their student’s grades, attendance and discipline, online.
There were raffles of school supplies at many tables, and the African American Cultural Society had a table full of items for children to select an item from.
“This is one of our community outreaches this year,” Yumeka Carey, administrative assistant at the AACS, said. “We want to give back to the community, especially the little ones.”
The back to school tax free weekend in Florida will be Aug. 5-7.
