Thieves steal steel from construction site
10:30 a.m. Harbor View Drive and Heron Drive. Grand theft: Two men contacted the Sheriff’s Office after seeing a couple of guys in a pickup truck drive up to a construction site, load the pickup with steel beams and then drive off, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
The theft happened at about 10:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at the intersection of Harbor View Drive and Heron Drive, the witnesses told a deputy. The thieves, they said, were driving a black pickup with the license plate covered over. One of the men contacted the construction company.
A construction worker, talking to a deputy, said he’d just gotten a call from a scrap yard that had been sold steel beams. The deputy told him to go there and meet with a deputy to ID them. The man did so: They were the stolen beams, and the scrap yard had a description of the two men, the truck and its tag number.
Later the same day, around 3:30 p.m., three construction workers arriving at the site saw two guys trying to tie a steel beam into a black pickup. One of the workers called 911 and all three tried to follow the truck, but it took off at high speed.
Deputies stopped the truck, which had a stolen steel beam in the back, and arrested both men and charged them with two counts of grand theft.
Woman charged after using counterfeit $50 bill for fast food
11:31 a.m. First block of Old Kings Road N. Uttering forged bills: A woman went to the drive-through of a fast food restaurant and handed the cashier a $50 bill to pay for her food. But the cashier noticed that the bill looked strange, and when a manager checked it with a counterfeit detection pen, the bill turned out to be a fake, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report.
The customer who’d tried to pay with it looked shaky and nervous, and told the cashier that she’d gotten the $50 from a gas station the previous night, the cashier later told a deputy. The cashier thought that was odd: She’d never asked the customer where she got the bill, or told her she thought it was fake.
Restaurant staff called the Sheriff’s Office, and a deputy stopped the customer while she waited at the second drive-through window. Speaking with a deputy who confirmed that the bill was a fake, the woman said she hadn’t gotten the $50 from the gas station, but had tried to use it there and been turned away by a clerk who thought it was fake. She also had another $50 like it. It also turned out to be counterfeit.
She told the deputy she hadn’t tried to find out whether the bills were actually real or not. Deputies arrested her on a charge of uttering a false bill.
