The following are adapted from news releases:

Five Flagler County high school students, four boys and one girl, were the guest speakers at the Monday, Sept. 14 meeting of American Legion Post 115. The students spoke about their experiences during their week in Tallahassee. American Legion Boys State is an educational opportunity for students to see government instruction first-hand. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a similar program, Girls State.

The students took part in the political process through role-play civic exercises. The non-partisan program does not reference actual political parties but instead uses the mythical parties, “Nationalists and Federalists.”

The four boys, Reiley Pickering and Sokret Pond from Matanzas High School; and Alex Lull and William Gibbs from Flagler Palm Coast High School, attended Boys State sponsored by the Post. McKenzie Smith from Flagler Palm Coast High School attended Girls State sponsored by the Auxiliary Unit 115.
