Congratulations to the Matanzas High School Student Based Enterprise students Nicole Corder and Josh Hobbs, who will be going to the International DECA Conference May 3-6 in Atlanta with their Gold Certified SBE event. They achieved the highest standards for a school-based enterprise, thereby providing students work experience lading to management, supervision and leadership skills.
In order to receive recertification, the contestants created a 30 page manual including The Coffee Spot’s entrepreneurship procedures and policies.
Nick Jahn and Michel Manning also placed fourth at the Florida DECA Career Development Conference for their Sports Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Making event.
FPC Model UN wins at competition
The Flagler Palm Coast High School Model United Nations Club brought home awards from the Tallahassee Southern Model United Nations Conference.
In Model UN, student delegates attend conferences throughout Florida in the same manner member states debate issues of global concern. Awards were presented to Samira Remal for Best Position Paper; and honorable mentions were given to Remal, Forrest Mason and Krystene Maceda, who all represented Saudi Arabia in committees listed as follows: General Assembly the First, Commission on Sustainable Development and the United Nations Development Programme.
Other students who attended the conference were Aga Bereznicka, Autumn Sanson, Daniel Thomas, Daniel Sarmiento, Jeyda Deniz, Nicole Fuller, Olivia Mason, Tiara Sankra and Tyler Jarnagin.
FPC dancers earn 29 Superiors
The Flagler Palm Coast dance team more than doubled its Superior ratings at this year's competition, bringing home 29 Superior ratings.
"Specifically, the feedback included the level of focus, discipline, stellar work ethic, beautiful poise and extreme respect that they have for the art form of dance," wrote teacher Janice Monsanto.
Dancers who competed are as follows: Rylee Armstrong, Danielle Benet, Kendahl Bermudez, Mia Broadnax, Diamond Corbin, Elizabeth Exantus, Amber Leishman, Autumn Leishman, Akila Lynch, Abbie Phinney, Kaitlyn St. Clair and Sumer Taylor.
Pen pals encourage love of writing
As Florida FCAT Writes approaches, two teachers from Old Kings Elementary School are teaching younger students to become engaged writers.
Second-grade teacher Kristen Dickinson and third-grade teacher Ellen Sperber have joined forces to pair up their classes by becoming writing pen pals. This vertical alignment in instruction will support fourth-grade student-writing proficiency. The students write to each other daily as they build vocabulary, increase sentence fluency and learn about conventions.
Pen paling is one way Old Kings Elementary School teachers are incorporating writing into the curriculum to inspire students to write everyday and enjoy the writing process while implementing writing strategies that will develop successful writers.

Jesse Flores, of Palm Coast, was named to the Fall 2013 Dean's List at the School of Visual Arts, New York City.
