Students at Matanzas High School have teamed up with the Palm Coast Fire Department to film a public service announcement opposing texting while driving.

The video was recorded by students of Tracy Hicks' Matanzas' TV Production class, according to Student Body President Stefano Schibeci.

"Just preproduction took about two months, with scrips and storyboards," Schibeci said. "As the concept developed, my team and I got real-world exposure to the acts of filming and producing."

Lt. Brian Mugford, Braden Botton, Rob Murphy and Dan Driscoll from the Palm Coast Fire Department all were featured in the video.

Mother and daughter Brianna Klinger-Garcia and Sandra Klinger star in the video, but Brianna couldn't make it to to filming of the crash scene and needed a stunt double: Matanzas student Ashley Helmer.

"She had to go through the real steps taken on a crash," Schibeci said. "The jaws of life cut through the car. I grew nervous filming when they took the whole roof off, shattering the glass."

Editing alone, he added, took more than 200 hours.

"The whole editing experience opened my mind to countless professional tips," Schibeci said. "Mrs. Hicks is like a mentor to all of us. She has real-world experience from Hollywood. She influences us everyday with her professional poise."

The video can now be seen on YouTube.
