It took more than 79 minutes for Matanzas to score a goal against Flagler Palm Coast back in November in a game that ended 1-1.

But on Saturday, Matanzas’ Faruh Isakov slotted the game-winning goal with about 12 minutes to play, giving Matanzas a 2-1 win over its crosstown rival. It was Matanzas’ first win over FPC wince coach Rich Weber’s first season two years ago.

FPC (8-2-2) took an early 1-0 lead when Drew Jones uncorked a blistering shot from about 30 yards. The shot knuckled and dipped underneath the crossbar to put the Bulldogs in front.

From there, the two teams exchanged blows, with both teams rifling off several first-half shots. Minutes after the water break, Matanzas’ Faruh Isakov ripped a shot, but it was saved by FPC keeper Austin Davis. The rebound came right to Frank Nabico, who slotted the sitter to equalize for Matanzas in the 26th minute.

At the half, Weber made some tactical changes — something he thought was the difference over the final 40 minutes.

Then, with about 12 minutes to go in the game, Isakov took possession of the ball inside FPC's 18-yard box and tucked away the go-ahead goal to give Matanzas the win.

After battling through a tough, early season schedule, the Pirates are beginning to hit their stride. Saturday’s game against FPC was the first time Weber has had all several players back, including Isakov and Antony Polinskiy.

“We have had pieces out all year, and getting everybody back and healthy has made a big difference,” Weber said after the game.

Matanzas 12-2-4) had the better of the play in the second half, and Weber said he thought it was because his team was actually going against the wind.

“We were trying to go too direct (in the first half),” Weber said. “We started to possess it well. That’s the way I prefer to play.”

FPC coach Noah Braun said he could see the fatigue set in for his side late in the second half. It was the first game for the both teams since mid-December.

No excuses, Braun said.

“There’s nothing to be disappointed with,” he said. “The boys gave everything they had. Matanzas scored two goals, and we scored one. I thought (Matanzas) was the better squad for the second half. It is what it is.”

Matanzas plays Pine Ridge Jan. 7 in a District 6-3A game. With a win, Matanzas would secure the No. 2 seed for the district tournament and will get a bye. Also, with a win over Pedro Menendez on Jan. 10, Matanzas would play for the St. Johns River Conference championship on Jan. 14.

FPC plays DeLand Jan. 8. With a win, the Bulldogs would finish in a tie with Spruce Creek for first place in District 2-5A. A coin toss would determine who gets the top seed.
