About 100 women — and a few men — came to Florida Hospital Flagler to hear to Dr. Thomas Joiner, board-certified interventional cardiologist, speak about women and heart disease Feb. 7.

While attendees enjoyed a heart-healthy breakfast of egg sandwiches on whole wheat English muffins, with oatmeal and fruit, Joiner spoke about the various risk factors of heart disease, as well as the signs and symptoms of both heart disease and heart attacks. He also discussed some of the differences between men and women’s hearts and heart attacks signs, as well as the latest treatment technology.

Firefighter/paramedic David Faust was named Palm Coast Fire Department Career Firefighter of the Year, and Lt. Paul Matarazzo was honored as Volunteer Firefighter of the Year at the Palm Coast Fire Department’s annual awards banquet Feb. 15.

Fire Chief Mike Beadle was the speaker at the annual event at the Elks Lodge. Faust received the department’s top award for his efforts to save the City $30,000 in EMS costs in the annual budget. In addition to Faust and Matarazzo, nine other fire personnel were honored for exceptional service and performance.

Fire personnel who responded to the Starlight Tornado in December also were awarded a tornado ribbon for their service. Flagler Beach author to host Hungry Ghost Festival
With a desire to offer something different for her readers, author of the Hungry Ghost Series, Becky M. Pourchot, will host a Hungry Ghost Festival 5:30-8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Kokomo’s Café, in Flagler Beach.

In honor of the release of the third book in her series, “Ghost Tears”, Pourchot will be recruiting local talent to create a fun festival-like atmosphere. For a small fee, photographer and award winning storyteller Mystic Mel will let fans take “photographs with ghosts” through use of green screen technology, while artist Brandi Jaeger, of Spirited Spunk, will be hosting a paranormal-themed craft project. Flagler Palm Coast High School senior Diana Nguyen will be giving henna tattoos and Kokomo’s Café will be featuring special story-themed food on its menu.

Pourchot has adapted the concept of the hungry ghost, first found in Chinese folklore, by creating ghostly characters who seek the help of 15-year-old Gala Rhyce, a reluctant ghost whisperer living in Flagler Beach. The book is targeted for midgrade to young adult readers; however, fans of all ages enjoy reading the trials of the quirky main character and her ghostly companions.

“I’m really excited about ‘Ghost Tears.’ Gala starts school at Flagler Palm Coast High School and gets entangled with a whole new type of ghost,” Pourchot says about her newest book. “A year and a half ago the series was just an idea in my head. Now, three books later, I’m excited to offer an event really special to my fans. It’s time to celebrate.”
