The Flagler County Math District competition took place last month, at Wadsworth Elementary. The competition was created by Marina Jarova, math curriculum specialist for Flagler County. This is the second year this event has taken place in Flagler County.

“Knowing math facts is similar to knowing sight words - it frees up the mind to solve real world math problems,” Jarova said.

The winners of this year’s competition are as follows: third grade: Isabella Tietje, Belle Terre Elementary School; fourth grade: Sean Gilliam, Bunnell Elementary School; fifth grade: Derek Hart, Wadsworth Elementary School; sixth grade: Lena Heng, Belle Terre Elementary School.

Bunnell team named Gridiron Breakfast Champions
The Bunnell Elementary School team was named Gridiron Breakfast Challenge Champions April 3, at the Fuel Up to Play 60 Gridiron Breakfast Challenge sponsored by the National Dairy Council, the NFL, The Dairy Farmers Association and Publix at Alltell Stadium, in Jacksonville.

Their presentation included a mini frittata muffin, a palm tree made from a banana and kiwi and a cut out of a cow made of watermelon. Judges were mostly impressed with the teamwork of the students as they prepared all of the food themselves with very little assistance from their advisors.

The student team of Patricia Blackburn, Jonathan Crosson, Chris Crosson and Quinn Cochran were accompanied by their Fuel 60 Ag Club advisors Cathie Zanella, Danielle Burton and Deborah Hough and one of four teams chosen for the challenge.
