The Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club donated $2,000 to the Teens-In-Flight program.

“The Warrior Brotherhood MC is a long-time supporter of our program," said Col Jack Howell, the program's administrator. "They donated $2,000 last year, as well, and it’s donations like these that help give our kids the opportunity to learn to fly.”

Teens-In-Flight is a nonprofit formed to support the families of our military.

Musicians with a heart play for a cause
A benefit performance of The Black Sheep Ceili Band will be held 7-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at McK’s Tavern, 218 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach. There is no cover for this performance, and all tips and funds raised will be donated to the Volusia/Flagler County Coalition for the Homeless – for homeless school children in Volusia and Flagler schools.

In Flagler County, Homeless Education Coordinator Dr. Pamela Jackson-Smith reported a total of 517 homeless students enrolled in Flagler schools last school year, and 293 students have been identified to date this school year.

“Support from the community is of great benefit to these students and families in transition,” Jackson-Smith said. “Emergency, transitional and permanent housing solutions are needed for our homeless families in Flagler County.”

According to Pam Woods, homeless liaison for Volusia County schools, Volusia County served 2,195 homeless children during the prior school year and 1,509 to date this school year.

“These children struggle to be successful in school and community support is important to their success,” Woods said.

The Black Sheep Ceili Band is comprised of members from two central Florida traditional Irish bands – Banished Misfortune and Just Twistin’ Hay. Since their debut, the band has raised more than $4,800 for various causes.

Local hero serves in 20th class of AmeriCorps NCCC
Alyson Bonner, daughter of Ray and Debbie Bonner, was inducted Nov. 13 into a 10-month term of service in the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program. She began work on her first of four long-term service projects the next day.

As a Corps member, Bonner will be responsible for completing a series of six- to eight-week team projects.

Twenty-eight teams composed of more than 300 Sacramento-based Corps members and team leaders are serving on their first projects. Twenty-one of the 28 teams deployed from Sacramento Nov. 14 to projects throughout California. Projects include helping with improvements at three state parks, restoring wilderness at Death Valley National Park and assisting at food banks and volunteer management in Los Angeles. The seven remaining teams are working on projects throughout the Pacific Region in Idaho, Oregon, and Utah.

Before joining NCCC, Bonner graduated from Flagler Palm Coast High School in 2008 and Flagler College in 2012, where she studied elementary education.
