+ Congrats, grad!
Maritssa Vazquez Zedar graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the State University of New York (SUNY), Empire State College. 

Her goal was to get her degree before she turned 50, and she beat that goal by three months
.
After earning her associate’s degree at Daytona State College, two years ago, her bachelor’s courses were earned online, from her home office, in Palm Coast. 

Vazquez Zedar is a real estate agent at Parkside Realty Group.
 

+ Hello? Are you out there? ... Calling all teen photographers!
The Flagler County Public Library has announced the theme for this year’s teen photography contest: “city street scenes.”

The contest is open to any Flagler County resident between the ages of 12 and 18.

There is no entry fee, and work must be submitted in print, no smaller than 5-by-7 or larger than 8-by-12. Photos may be submitted in black and white or color and can have a glossy or matte finish.

For more contest rules and an entry form, visit the library’s welcome desk.

Deadline for entry submission is 5 p.m. Oct. 17. 

+ University Women of Flagler award $9,300 in scholarships
The members of University Women of Flagler were recently awarded $9,300 in scholarships to four graduates of Flagler County schools at their scholarship luncheon at the Palm Coast Yacht Club.
These students were selected by the scholarship committee out of a pool of more than 50 applicants. The committee was chaired by Florence Knox.

Scholarship recipients of $1,700 each are as follows: Julia Dovnarovich, Flagler Palm Coast High School; Brittany Haney, Matanzas High School; Emily Kruithof, FPC; and Shelbie Miller, Matanzas.
Also receiving awards were three previous winners from 2012. Recipients of $500 each this year are as follows: Ashley Pelosi, University of South Florida; Jerica Trotter, Stetson University; and Julian Tyrone, University of Florida.

The club also awarded $1,000 to the Take Stock in Children program.

Since its inception, the group has awarded more than $39,000 in scholarships and $6,000 to the Take Stock in Children program.

+ Host families needed
Six host families are needed for one to four weeks, starting June 30, and going through July 26. The exchange students, ages 14-17, will be visiting from Bilbao, Spain.

+ Educations foundation installs new officers
The Flagler County Education Foundation installed its 2013-14 officers. 

Flagler County Property Appraiser Jay Gardner stepped down as the 2012-13 president to welcome Joe Rizzo, owner of Woody’s Bar-B-Q, as the 2013-14 president.

“In choosing you, the board of directors, we believe in your integrity, leadership, sense of fairness, foresight and ability to carry out your responsibilities,” Superintendent Janet Valentine said during the installation ceremony. “I know each of you will advance the foundation’s mission and bring great value to our students.” 

Take Stock in Children Scholar Daria Harbater sang “Seasons of Love,” from the Broadway Musical “Rent” in honor of the newly elected officers. 

Robert Cuff was thanked for his service and dedication as he retires from the board. Cuff will remain active by working on various foundation committees. 

Other officers are as follows: President Elect Victoria Tiehen, vice president of Suntrust Bank; Vice President Rebecca DeLorenzo, Ppresident of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates; Treasurer Steve Barnier, owner/president of Giglio & Sarote Accounting & Financial Services; and Secretary Raven Sword, of Livingston, Wolverton & Sword. P.A.

+ Playhouse to host musical auditions
Flagler Playhouse will conduct open auditions for performers of all ages and backgrounds for its upcoming performance of “Baby, the New Musical” 6 p.m. Sunday, June 30, and Monday, July 1. The show will be directed by Chelsea Jo Conard, with musical direction by Curtis Powell. 

The performance will take the stage Sept. 20 and will run through Oct. 6. 

Flagler Playhouse is located at 301 E. Moody Blvd., Bunnell.
