Rodney Harshbarger, music teacher at Old Kings Elementary School, was named as a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award, presented by The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. There are 217 music teachers from 195 cities in 45 states in the quarterfinals. In total, more than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states.
The Music Educator Award was established to recognize current educators (kindergarten to college, in public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to music education. The semifinalists will be announced in August.
Now enrolling: Leadership Flagler Class 21
The Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates is currently accepting applications for Leadership Flagler.
The three-month program seeks to provide insight into Flagler County’s operations, attributes, issues and opportunities, while encouraging participants to take active roles as stewards of and advocates for positive change within the community.
Ten to 15 candidates representing Flagler County’s business community are selected each year through a competitive process. Tuition for each participant in Leadership Flagler is $500 for chamber members, and $700 for future members. Scholarships may be available; call Winnie Costello at the Center for Business Excellence for details at 586-5169.

United Way announced contributions to local programs
The United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties’ Board of Directors voted this month to approve $1,850,753 in distributions to local community programs and for the upcoming fiscal year. This allowed for a 1.5% increase in allocations to partner agencies over last year’s distributions.
Among the Flagler County programs to receive funds were Family Life Center, Flagler Summer Camp, Flagler Volunteer Services and Project WARM.

The Rotary Club of Flagler County is hosting the sixth-annual Run 4 the Free Clinic, a 4-mile walk/run benefitting the Flagler County Free Clinic on Sunday, June 9, at Wadsworth Park in Flagler Beach.
The Women’s Ministry of Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast is hosting its annual girls conference, A Girl Thing for Christ, 8:30-3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the church, 75 Pine Lakes Parkway S. The theme scripture is “One of A Kind, God’s Unique Creation,” Psalm 139:13-18. Registration forms are available at the church and online at www.mtcalvarypc.org.
