Fred Haase, former artist for NASA at Cape Canaveral during the Apollo Space Program, is known for his whimsical portraits, but his love of nature and automobile racing led him in a new direction.

His one-person show begins Aug. 2, when Ocean Books & Art presents “Herons & Vettes,” Haase’s creative and fun look at local birds and his favorite corvettes. The Opening Reception is 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Ocean Books & Art, 200 S. Oceanshore Blvd., Flagler Beach, and will tie in with Flagler Beach’s First Friday – Music in the Park celebration right around the corner.

Haase studied art at Mankato State University, now Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he majored in acrylic painting and pottery. He starts each painting with tempera and magic marker sketches as he works through the shapes and motion he feels are important to each piece. The results are a mix of detail and abstract which bring his subjects to life in bright and bold images.

With a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from University of Miami, Haase started Milgo Electronics, in Miami, American TeleCare, in Minneapolis, and Action Circuit Productions, in Satellite Beach. After this active business history, he looked for a softer, gentler beach community to allow him to ease back and paint his herons, gulls, turtles and, of course, vettes. Flagler Beach fit perfectly, where he enjoys walks on the beach and frequent opportunities to revel in its relaxed beach lifestyle.

The art opening is open to the public and the show will remain on exhibit through Aug. 31. After that, Haase will remain one of the talented artists who are calling Ocean Books & Art their new home.
