Ten years ago, Jeanette Wheeler was searching for a way to involve African American youth in an activity to increase their knowledge of their cultural history and their ancestors’ contributions to society. As a result, the African American Cultural Society’s Youth Reality Program was formed and on Sunday, Feb. 17, the program presented its 10th show.

“There was very little information about black history in the schools,” Wheeler said. “We want our children to feel proud of themselves the same as an Italian or Jewish child would. If you feel good about yourself, you will be a better person to get along with, (and) you will do better in the world. It’s an overall plus for someone to know about their history and feel good about themselves.”

The theme of the show focused on highlighting the past and celebrating the future. Some individuals portrayed in the show were inventor Lewis Latimer, pilot Barrington Irving, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas and President Barack Obama.

Funds raised at the show will go toward post-secondary education scholarships for students who have been involved in the show, which will be given in June.
