Hollingsworth Gallery will open its fifth-annual S.E.C.C.A. Members Show 6 p.m. Feb. 9, at the gallery, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suites 209B and 210B.
The show, which features members of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, has no theme and gives artists room to pick their own themes.
“It’s good to support the people who are supporting you,” said Curator J.J. Graham. “If every show was about the members then it would be redundant, but I want them to know that the gallery appreciates them too.”
One artist who will be featured in the show is Palm Coast resident Jan Geyer. Geyer, who moved to Palm Coast last year, is classically trained and has a history of painting ink a realist form. Recently though, she has begun to paint in a more expressive style.
Working mostly in large format, close to life-size canvases, Geyer, almost always paints people. Often times her work has to do with an emotional situation or happening.
Her piece “Beings Among Us,” which will be part of the show expresses the feeling that there are beings among us that we don’t always see is all places, watching us and guiding us.
The original concept for the painting came from a photograph of a performance art piece at the Tate Modern, in London, last fall. A group of people were walking one way, stopping, screaming and turning to walk another direction in unison.
The piece started as a realistic expression of the photo, but as Geyer started painting and thinking in a more in the expressive style, she started seeing objects and faces.
“I didn’t go into the painting with that in mind, it’s just kind of what it turned into,” she said. “I’ve never done that before, and not sure if I would do it again, it just happened.”
Graham said that a variety of work has been submitted for this show. It will be a mix with traditional and abstract art. He encourages patrons to attend with an open mind, for this show is sure to be a taste of the local scene.
