The City Commissioners talked about goals for 2013, which included continued work on pensions and infrastructure.

The Ormond Beach City Commissioners talked about familiar topics such as pensions and infrastructure at their Feb. 5 goal-setting workshop, but they also discussed fishing, gardening and legal advice.

The commissioners hope to maintain the current tax rate, increase economic development, amend certain code enforcement elements and add a family fishing tournament.

One item, which was raised by Commissioner James Stowers as a potential solution to the city’s pension problem, involved selling off some city-owned property, and was only suggested as an “out-of-the-box” solution.

Commissioner Bill Partington suggested some form of a free legal clinic or roundtable where residents could get advice and counsel.

“A lot of people, who are lower income, don’t have an attorney to talk to, and are scared to talk to somebody,” Partington said. “This would be ... relaxed.”

The potential goals will be brought back to the commission at a later date to be voted on for approval.

No-traffic zone at Andy Romano?

Andy Romano Beachfront Park is less than a month from being open to the public, and the city, citing safety concerns, wants the Volusia County Council to make the area of the beach traffic-free area, in addition to a no-parking area.

“(The county has) indicated, as they have in other parks on the beach, that there will be no parking in front of the Andy Romano Beachfront Park,” City Manager Joyce Shanahan said. “But they did not indicate a willingness to make that a traffic-free zone.”

The city worked with Volusia County, which has jurisdiction on the beaches, to get the project funded and built.
