+ Art and Soul teams with Old Kings first-grade students
Students in Mandy Cashman’s first-grade class at Old Kings Elementary School painted ceramic hearts provided by The Art and Soul Studio on Wednesday.

It’s a win-win, Cashman said. Not only does the project support a local business, but it also gives her students a creative outlet.

“One of my favorite things is to get out in the community and into the classrooms,” said Erin Walker, owner of The Art and Soul Studio. “Sometimes this is the only chance students get to do what we do in the studio.”

+ Old Kings K-Kids collect, donate more than 1,000 books
During a recent celebration of Literacy Week, Old Kings Elementary School collected and packed more than 1,000 books that were donated during a Just 1 Book Blitz.

The Old Kings K-Kids have been involved in the Just 1 Book program for the past two years, but making the connection with Literacy Week through a Just 1 Book Blitz is a first for the club.

“Collecting more than 1,000 books over four days exceeded our wildest dreams,” said Rita Jones, third-grade teacher and K-Kids faculty advisor. “Service projects like Just 1 Book exemplify developing the core values of K-Kids and Kiwanis: caring, inclusiveness, leadership and character building.”

Books collected through the Just 1 Book program are distributed throughout Flagler County.

“Through Just 1 Book, our club has also made a compassionate connection  to a school thousands of miles from Florida,” Jones said. “After learning of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, our club wanted to do something special in memory of those who lost their lives. A copy of the  book, ‘Number the Stars’ by Lois Lowry was purchased and each of our K-Kids signed the book.

“The book is a story of a young girl who demonstrated remarkable courage and bravery during the Holocaust. We felt that it was a fitting memorial to those who lost their lives, and a tribute to those who survived.”

+ 5K to raise money for Old Kings’ music department
The second-annual Have a Heart for the Arts 5K and Kids Half-Mile Fun Run will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Flagler Beach Pier.

The run is a fundraiser for Old Kings Elementary School. Last year, the event raised enough money to buy 14 piano keyboards for Rodney Harshbarger’s music classroom.

Entry fee is $25 for the 5K and $5 for the kids run. The maximum fun run age is 13.

+ Flagler Library to host Big Test Success workshop

This event is open to all Flagler County students and parents.
