CLASS NOTES: AP kids pull in high marks

Matanzas High School recognized a number of students for their success on this year's Advanced Placement exams, at a recent School Board meeting. In May, 267 students, up from 251, students took AP exams in 13, up from 12, subjects. Of those students, 54.9% of the AP exams received scores of 3 or higher. In 2012, the average number of students scoring a 3 or higher was 52%.

AP Scholars, students who received a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams, are as follows: Jacob Chetam, Nicole Corder, Rachel Detherow, Kassandra Garces, Kelly Kukitz, Brooke Manze, Shanna Merceron, Naomi Muniz-Velez, Emily Petkovsek, Bryant Sohl, Austin Stanley, Yichen Yu, Marissa Ambrosia, Nina Estasquio, Michael Fritz, Nicholas Greco, Shane Heiser, Gabie Jackman, Haley Kook, Ralph Lopez, Bryanna Maddox, DJ Oliva, Brad Parks, Caitlin Peterson and Mikayla Preston.

AP Scholars with Honor, students who averaged a score of 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scored a 3 or higher on four or more exams, are as follows: Madilyn Beckman, Cristofer Caballeros, Sebastian Cederia, Jonathan Guilbe, Cleyton Huff, Ryan Kirk, Anna Pekarsky, Danny Bonilla, Sara Carr, Tiana Desantis, Bryan Di-u-doney, Emily Goodwin, Henry Lao, Dakota Manford and Skyler Payne.

AP Scholar with Distinction, students who earned an average score of 3.5 or higher on all AP exams, and scored 3 or higher on 5 or more exams, are as follows: William Conville, Cassie Cuyler, Amanda Languhauser, Joseph Pelligrino, Brandon Corder, Cheyanna Espinoza, Giovanni Gonzalez, Evan Johnson, Cindy Orosz, Eliot Pardee, Nick Policastro and Lacey Runberger.

National AP Scholar, students who averaged a score of 4 or higher on all AP exams taken, and scored a 4 or higher on 8 or more exams, are as follows: Espinoza, Gonzalez, Johnson, Orosz, Pardee and Policastro.
 

Flagler ESE launches parent support group
The Exceptional Student Education Department of Flagler County Schools held its first meeting of the Flagler County Public Schools’ Exceptional Parent Support Group last week, at the Government Services Building, in Bunnell.

The group meets 6-7 p.m. the second Thursday of every month, under the direction of counselor Holly Arkin. The next free meeting is Dec. 12.
 

Matanzas FFA named national finalist in Agriscience Fair
Kady Rogers and Thomas Rocco, members of the Matanzas High School FFA Chapter, were national finalists in the 2013 National FFA Agriscience Fair at the 86th National FFA Convention & Expo last month, in Louisville, Ky.

The National FFA Agriscience Fair is a competition for FFA members who are interested in the science and technology of agriculture. It is held each year during the National FFA Convention & Expo and sponsored nationally by Cargill, John Deere and Syngenta.
 

Enroll now: FTI winter term

Flagler Technical Institute is now accepting registrations for its winter term, to be held at 1 Corporate Drive.

There have been reports recently concerning repairs needed on the FTI building, but the building is open and officials have stated that, with safety issues addressed, classes may continue at FTI.

The term begins Jan. 24. Programs available include medical administrative specialist, medical coder/biller, patient care technician, patient care assistant, cosmetology, nails specialty, commercial vehicle driving, emergency medical technician, administrative office specialist, electrician apprenticeship, heating/air conditioning, childcare center operations and technology support services. The schools newest program, applied cyber security, is also accepting students, and scholarships are available.
