What does every dog want and need? A bandanna!

“We are making some really fun bandannas — Halloween is coming up, Christmas, patriotic, sports,” Kim Young, a real estate agent and volunteer who is helping to make the bandannas, wrote in an email. “We have a really good variety. Something for everyone.”

The bandannas cost $5, with all proceeds benefiting the Flagler Humane Society. So far, about $125 has been donated.

+ Since 1978: Flagler Palm Coast Kiwanis Club

This year alone, Flagler Palm Coast Kiwanis Club has donated $82,000 to the community, including $28,000 in scholarships. Volunteers have donated 3,186 hours of support, as well. To learn more about the club, visit www.fpckiwanis.org.

"We work in the schools, we have the reading programs, we get involved with the kindergartens, and we have volunteers help children read at the library," said Dr. Maria Barbosa, president-elect for 2013-14. "It's beautiful."

Next month, the club will hold its annual Children’s Safety Fair/Patriot Day event. It will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15, at Rymfire Elementary School, 1425 Rymfire Drive, and features a host of organizations, entertainment, vendors, free bike helmets, hot dogs and popcorn while supplies last.

The event is one of many ways the club has served the community for the past 35 years. The Kiwanis also host a luncheon during prayer week and hosts an annual awards ceremony to honor law enforcement and firefighters of the year (noon Oct. 10, at The Grand Club, 400 Pine Lakes Parkway). The Kiwanis Club supports education and leadership programs at schools, including K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key-Club, Terrific Kids, Bugs Programs, food distribution programs, the STUFF Bus, Seniors of the Month, scholarships, Boy and Girls Scouts, Little League and other programs. The club feeds almost 100 children through food donations.
