The following is adapted from a press release from the Office of the State Attorney:

Previously convicted at trial last month for aggravated battery, kidnapping and other charges, Major Harris III, of Palm Coast, was sentenced yesterday to life in prison plus 20 years.

Assistant State Attorney Doug Stanford presented evidence showing the defendant was a prison releasee reoffender, meaning he committed the crimes he was convicted of within three years of being released from prison. Harris was in prison for numerous convictions stemming from crimes committed in Volusia County, including two aggravated battery convictions.

“This is a defendant that came back to our community to continue his life of crime," said R.J. Larizza, state attorney. "He can now spend that life behind bars. Our office is committed to seeking the maximum sentence allowed by law for career criminals.”

As a result of Stanford proving Harris qualified to be sentenced as a prison releasee reoffender, Circuit Judge Raul Zambrano was required by law to sentence Harris to the mandatory maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Additionally, Zambrano sentenced Harris to 20 years consecutive to the life sentence for the additional convictions of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, and possession of firearm by convicted felon.

After the sentencing, Harris pled no contest to three separate pending charges, failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of child abuse. Judge Zambrano sentenced Harris to five years in prison, concurrent with his other sentence of life plus 20 years.
