Jeff and Mary Sawyer, of Kalamazoo Trail, have been recognized as the October Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.

The green-thumbed heroes designed and maintain their lakefront property themselves. The front yard contains 15 palm trees, mostly Washingtonian and roebelleni, as well as colorful foliage plants of variegated ginger and red and purple Kahili Ti plants. Dwarf bottlebrush are scattered amongst the foundation plantings of Hawaiian snow bush, holly, African boxwood and ligustrum. Pink crepe myrtle trees line the canal on the west side of the property.

There are three islands in the median of Kalamazoo Trail which the Sawyers have adopted through the city’s Adopt A Median, a neighborhood beautification project. These grassy strips have been planted and are maintained by the Sawyers. The island near their home has 35-foot-tall Washingtonian palms, Canary Island date palms and bird of paradise. All vegetation is drought tolerant, as there is no underground irrigation.
