Jim and Doreen Cathers, of Fleming Court, are recognized as November’s Selection of the Month for the Palm Coast Garden Club. They moved to Palm Coast in 2006 from Frankfort, Ill.,, a suburb of Chicago.

This corner lot on a saltwater canal is complete with all the diversity of plants, particularly palms, in the landscape. A large clump of Senegal date palms are planted near the driveway with ground covers of baby sun rose (ice plant), parson’s juniper and dwarf Mexican petunia.

White and purple dwarf Mexican petunias also line the paver sidewalk to the front entry. Foundation plantings include pygmy date palms, lady palms, podocarpus, dwarf bottle brush, dwarf nandina, yellow and salmon ixora, bird of paradise, bougainvillea, and white African iris.

In addition to the unusual Senegal date palms, there are clumps of Everglades or paurotis palms which are at least 20-feet tall and tower over the house. Queen and sabal palms round out the selection as well as a king sago with its upright trunk and stiff feather-like leaves. The dark green evergreen leaves of the large cardinal holly trees and D.D. Blanchard southern magnolias provide a contrast in the front beds. Coquina rocks, bird baths, statuary, bird houses and feeders, gazing balls and container gardens enhance this beautiful setting.

+The poppy drive is back
The Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign War Post 8696 will conduct its Poppy Drive Nov. 16-17.

Members of the post and its Ladies Auxiliary volunteer to work this program and will be at
various locations, including Publix at Palm Harbor, Cracker Barrel, Shell Gas Station at Country Club
Drive, Walmart, McDonald's, Perkins, Shell Gas Station at Old Kings Road, and Winn-Dixie at State Road
100.

The Buddy Poppy Campaign is a national program to distribute the poppy, which is the official memorial flower of the VFW. The term Buddy Poppy refers to the small red flower that represents the blood shed by American service members, and the veterans’ memories of their “buddies who never came back."

The poppies are assembled by disabled or hospitalized veterans. The VFW pays them for this service, which provides a financial and therapeutic benefit. The Poppy is not sold, but exchanged for a contribution.

Post Commander Lorenzo Nacci emphasized the point that all money donated by the public stays in Flagler County and is used to assist with veterans’ needs.
