Palm Coast resident to be honored at county memorial

Flagler County’s Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28 will have a special meaning for Palm Coast resident Samuel Natalicchio.

The World War II, U.S. Army veteran will be presented with the Knight of Legion of Honor sent to Flagler County by the French Republic. Gael de Maisonneuve, the Counsul General of France, sent a letter recently informing Natalicchio of the honor.

“I would like to extend, on behalf of our government and people, a heartfelt, congratulations for your introduction in the French Legion of Honor,” Maisonneuve wrote. “Without your bravery, and that of those who fought alongside you, France and Europe might have never been liberated from the barbarity of the Nazi occupation. Your efforts are both admirable and an example to follow, and it is our pleasure to award you France’s highest military distinction.”

The Memorial Day event, sponsored by the Flagler County Commission and the Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council, will feature keynote speaker and Flagler County resident Harry Gilman, Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Chaplain.

The Flagler Palm Coast High School Formality Singers and the Junior ROTC from both high schools will take part in the ceremony. Flagler County Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Golden Sands, Girl Scouts of America will be part of the ceremony as well.

Circuit Court Judge Raul Zambrano will play “Taps.”

The veterans groups to participate include the American Legion Post 115, Amvets Post 113, DAV Chapter 86, Italian American War Veterans Post 7, Jewish War Veterans Post 300, Marine Corps League 876, Military Officers Association of America, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Flagler County Veterans Service Office, VFW Post 8696 and the Knights of Columbus 2264 Color Corps.

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Government Services Building, at 1769 State Road 100, in Bunnell.
