When analyzing FCAT data, Coordinator of Assessment Accountability Shawn Schmidli will tell you that, this year more than ever, comparing Flagler scores to state scores — instead of comparing 2012 scores to 2011 scores — is the truest measure of growth.
“We’re just trying to reemphasize to folks that the standard for earning a 3 or above is harder this year,” he said. “So you’re actually not comparing apples to apples.”

Comparing local scores to those of the state, however, help put things in perspective.
A total of 62% of Flagler County third-graders earned a 3 or above on the FCAT math test, beating out the state’s 58% that scored in the same range.
Being that last year, Schmidli pointed out, the district and state tied in percentage of students scoring a 3 or more, at 78%, Flagler students actually showed comparative growth in 2012.
In reading, 62% also scored a 3 or higher in Flagler, compared to 56% in the state. The size of that gap did not change from last year, when Flagler scored a 78%, compared to the state’s 72%.
“I’d like to think that our Flagler County students will continue to outperform the state,” Schmidli said. “And we’re expecting that trend to continue.”
In both reading and math, Flagler’s ratio of students scoring above a 3 beat out Putnam and Volusia counties’ ratios but fell short of St. Johns’.
Schmidli is expecting an analysis of end-of-course exam scores to be released shortly. Scores for reading and math grades four to six are still pending.
