+ New bins prompt 15% spike in Palm Coast recycling
Palm Coast saw a 15% recycling increase in the first week of offering its new rewards program.

Households earn credits for recycling items like glass jars and bottles, aluminum cans, cereal boxes, junk mail and newspaper.

“As recycling increases, there is less trash going into our landfills,” Dianne Torino, contracts and risk manager for the city, said Monday.

Torino said the rewards program will help spark the local economy, too. “It’s a win-win for everyone,” she said.

+ County approves $52,272 for road, sidewalks rehab
The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners approved a $52,272 work authorization to CPH Engineers Inc. Monday, June 4, for the design of a sidewalk on State Road 100 and related improvements between Belle Terre Parkway and the city of Bunnell.

Paid for with grants from the state of Florida’s County and School District Infrastructure Pilot Program, the project will be 100% funded by the Florida Department of Transportation, as will improvements to County Road 302.

Through a Small County Outreach Program agreement, the commission also approved the design and construction for the resurfacing of County Road 302, totaling $1.3 million.

Citing a recent resident complaint, County Administrator Craig Coffey said that striping of the road would cost about $40,000.

“We are trying our best to move this project up,” he said, referencing the 2013-2014 planned start date of improvements. He said he is hesitant to stripe before resurfacing.
