With tougher FCAT cut scores and state grading criteria in place this year, district officials expected school grades to drop. And although scores did come in lower than in previous years, Flagler County schools still showed improvement compared to other Florida districts.
One of 18 state districts to lose it’s A status this year, Flagler raised its ranking from 29th in the state last year to 19th in 2012.
A total of 33% of all other districts scored a B grade in the state, whereas 21% of Florida districts earned an A grade; 36% earned a C; and 10% earned a D. In the face of stricter standards, 41.8% of schools maintained its letter grade from last year.
Of all subjects Flagler schools scored lower in than its A-rated competitors, science showed the largest scoring gap. Florida’s A-rated schools averaged 61% of its student body scoring a passing grade of 3 or above on the FCAT science test, whereas Flagler scored 42%, a 19-point differential.
Reading, writing and math all showed a smaller percent discrepancy, from two to eight points
