When National Arbor Day is held on the last Friday in April, several states, including Florida, observe the holiday as a time best suited for tree planting.

The Garden Club of Palm Coast celebrated Florida Arbor Day early, Friday, Jan. 20, by planting a tree in Town Center in memory of four club members who died this year: Doug and Mary Bentley, Hildegard Schwab and Margaret Davie.

Davie was the last charter member of the club, which was organized in 1975. She was chairwoman of the publicity committee and also club historian.

The Bentleys had been members from 1991 to 2004. They were also active in the Veterans of Foreign War.

Schwab was a member from 1989 to 2000. She was chairperson of the white elephant sales and door prize chair.

Steps for planting a containerized tree
1. Call before digging. Call the 811 hotline (see www.Call811.com) to have underground utilities located.
2. Handle the tree with care. Always lift it up by its root ball and keep its roots moist until you plant it.
3. Dig the proper hole. Dig to five times wider than the diameter of the root ball with sloping sides.
4. Dig to the proper depth. The trunk flare of the tree should sit slightly above ground level.
5. Back fill the hole with native soil. That is, unless the soil is all clay. Tamp soil gently to fill large air spaces.
6. Mulch the new tree. Add two to three inches of mulch around the planting area, but keep it one to two inches away from the trunk.
