Local mule and horse ranchers Bess and Charlton Wall, of Bunnell, will host a French exchange student, in June.

“We really wanted someone who rides,” said Bess, an empty nester and also a teacher at Flagler Palm Coast High School. “And we didn’t want to host for a full semester or the whole school year.”

That worked out, because 16-year-old Margault, from Lourdes, France, could only come to the U.S. for three weeks to a month, and she certainly does ride.

“I knew when I saw a picture of Margault, in mid-air, jumping a horse over a large obstacle, that she was the student for them,” said Dorothy Kelly, local coordinator for The Center for Cultural Interchange. Kelly will be supervising Margault’s stay here.

“Their excitement is contagious,” Kelly said. “She’s a very blessed young lady to have them as her host parents.”

Bess added: “My husband was born and lived his whole life in the South and hasn’t had the opportunity to meet many people from other countries, especially Europe. What a wonderful opportunity. ... What’s exciting for me is to have someone from France, who is not only interested in what we have to offer — riding — but experienced at it, too.”
