Traffic slowed on State Road 100 Tuesday, April 10, as Flagler County’s Special Olympians participated in the 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run coordinated by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
“This is always a great event,” said Flagler County Sheriff Don Fleming. “The participants run the course representing our county as part of a statewide event. Our Olympians work very hard throughout the year to compete in the Special Olympics. This run allows us to give them some recognition from the community.”
This event is held each year prior to Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games. The intrastate torch relay started at the end of March and culminates at the Opening Ceremonies May 18, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, in Kissimmee.
In Flagler County, the run began at Town Center and ended at the Kim C. Hammond Judicial Center, in Bunnell. There, Fleming accepted the torch and handed it to Circuit Court Judge Raul Zambrano.
“I am proud to take part in this today. I would like to thank all the runners,” Zambrano said, before passing the torch to David Hariton, volunteer coordinator for the Volusia County Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Volusia County deputies and other law enforcement officers conducted their torch run Wednesday, April 11.
