The Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign War Post 8696 will conduct its poppy drive Nov. 4 and Nov. 5. Members of the post and its Ladies Auxiliary will be at Town Center Publix, Cracker Barrel, the Shell Station on Country Club Drive, Walmart, McDonald’s, Perkins, the Shell Station on Old Kings Road and Winn Dixie on State Road 100.

The Buddy Poppy Campaign is a national program to distribute the poppy, which is the official memorial flower of the VFW. The term, “buddy poppy,” refers to the small red flower that represents the blood shed by American service members, and the memories of the veterans of their “buddies” who never came back.

Disabled and hospitalized veterans assemble the poppies. The VFW pays them for this service, thus providing a financial and therapeutic benefit. The poppy is not sold, but exchanged for a contribution.

The money from the drives stays in Flagler County to assist with veterans’ needs, said Post Commander Terry Howard.
