Elected officials, law enforcement officers and family members came together May 12 to honor four the Flagler County officers who died in duty since 1927.

Deputy Charles “Chuck” Sease was killed July 5, 2003. Deputy George Durrance was killed Aug. 25, 1927. Sheriff Perry Hall was killed Aug. 21, 1927.

Sofia Antonio, mother-in-law of Sease, said that the yearly memorial service is significant.

“It means a lot,” she said. “He was my son-in-law. I love him.”

Darryl Haywood, who was a state trooper not a Flagler County officer but lived here, was killed Oct. 2, 2004.

One yellow rose was laid at the foot of the moment in front of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Operations Center to honor the men.

Ten law enforcement officers have been killed on duty in 2011 in Florida — the most of any state in the U.S., according to Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming.

“This is unacceptable,” Fleming said. “We pledge to carry on in the same goal we all share: protecting (our community).”

He noted that the 10th anniversary of the attack on New York City, Sept. 11, 2001, is nearing, and said, “God bless our troops.”
