Each tested grade level reports increases.

Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test writing scores are in, and according to testing coordinator Jim Devine, the numbers are “very positive.”

“(It’s) a good beginning for the district,” Devine said, noting that reading and math scores won’t be released until early June. Comprehensive school and district grades will be decided after that.

Although the Florida Department of Education has requested that writing scores not be compared from year to year because of varying prompts, the mean result for Flagler County’s fourth- and 10th- grade students did increase in comparison to 2010’s scores. Fourth graders recorded the highest averages and strongest increases in the district

Tenth grade raised its mean to 4.1, one-tenth of a point higher than the state’s.

The mean score of county eight graders did not change, and came out below the state average by 0.1.

Devine pointed out that more students are scoring 4.0 or higher on their writing prompts.

Fourth grade’s 4-or-higher percentage rose 12 points, from 73% to 85% — 4% higher than the state. Tenth grade’s percentage rose to 78% — 3% higher than the state. Eighth grade rose from 76% to 79% — coming in 3% lower than the state average.

Around 1,000 students were tested in each of the three grades.

Devine said, “Writing is just one component of the school grade.” Therefore, these results may not be good indicators of school grades. In consideration of the district’s three major FCAT goals, though — which are to improve on last year’s numbers, improve by at least five points when possible and produce numbers higher than the state — the outlook so far is promising.
