When Church on the Rock Youth Director Lisa Blum got the idea to send the youth group to a mission’s camp, in Georgia, she knew it was going to take a lot of fundraising.

And what better way to fundraise than get fellow churches involved? Blum said.

Four churches in the area participated in the first Hoops for Jesus Basketball Tournament held April 30, at First Baptist Church.

Through donations and sponsorships from local businesses, the tournament raised $1,078.

“The churches finally came together for the purpose of our children, and that’s so important,” Blum said. “All people need to do is ask, and people are just waiting to help somebody.”

The tournament participants: first place, God’s Family Bible Church; second place, First Baptist Church; third place, Church on The Rock; and fourth place, Trinity Presbyterian.

Although the tournament was a great success, the youth group still has more fundraising to do, Blum said.

The next fundraisers will be a spaghetti dinner 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, and a car wash noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21.
