The Points of Light Institute, a national organization located in Atlanta, has named Carla Traister, of The Sheltering Tree, as one of its 2010 recipients of the Daily Points of Light Award.

Traister has coordinated the efforts of The Sheltering Tree, Flagler County’s only cold weather shelter, since its inception in 2008. The shelter opens when overnight temperatures are forecast to drop below 40 degrees. In the 2010-2011 season, the shelter was open 32 nights, hosted 1,000 guests and served approximately 2,100 meals — a three-fold increase since 2008.

“It has been a life-changing experience for me,” Traister said. “I just wanted to help those out in the cold to come in and get some sleep in a warm place.”

The Sheltering Tree provides year-round services, including a donation-dependent food pantry.

There are 270 volunteers who assist with meals and sheltering needs in addition to basic living services, such as clothing and social-service related issues.

The shelter provides a free community supper every Wednesday night throughout the year, in partnership with First United Methodist Church, in Bunnell.
