The Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club purchased $2,000 worth of books to be distributed to third-grade students in summer reading programs.

The children have the opportunity to select five books to bring home.

“It’s pretty much like a miniature book fair for some kids who have not had the funds or opportunity to purchase books for their very own,” said Kiwanian Richard Conkling.

The Library of My Own program started eight years ago as a Title 1 grant.

Since then, the concept was molded into the school district’s regular summer reading program for students who had difficulty passing the FCAT.

“The school district cannot purchase books like this to give to the students for them to keep; however, if Kiwanis provides the funds for the purchase of the books, then they can be given to the students,” Conkling said. “It makes it a rather unique program.”
